Nursery and Reception have this week enjoyed exploring their new continuous provision area!
The staff have worked hard to create a new area for our children to explore sensory play within the school yard. The children enjoyed making 'ice cream sundaes'!
The PTA's Community Hwb has been busy this morning with some very special visitors!
Today is Food Pantry day! The Food Pantry is open from 9am to 1pm on Fridays.
The Community Hwb and shop is open to the whole community on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am to 1pm. Please call in for a cup of tea and a browse of their pre-loved shop.
Thank you as always to our PTA members who volunteer their time to support our school.
On Monday, Years 1, 2 and 3 took part in an African Drumming workshop in our Sports Hall.
As you can imagine, it was an extremely loud session! The children had a great time trying out the different instruments. Thank you to Dan Phelps from Phelps Music!
On Monday, Years 4, 5 and 6 visited Big Pit!
The children made the 300 foot descent to Pit Bottom and toured a small section of the twenty six miles of mine workings beneath Big Pit. The tour was a fantastic but very cold experience!
We also took part in a workshop on 'Servants of the Empire: Victorian Children at Work' where we learned more about the lives of Victorian children who lived and worked in our local area.

Working your way through it a piece at a time, completing activities along the way.

It is delivered over six 2.5-3 hour sessions which cover a number of topics: Autism and diagnosis; Communication; Sensory Issues; Understanding behaviour; Managing behaviour; and Choice of topic decided by parents/carers.

Abercerdin welcomes Nantymoel Primary School's Netball and Football Teams!
On Friday 26th April, our mixed Year 5 and 6 netball and football teams took on Nantymoel Primary School. Both contests were thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining, but it was the away team who came away victorious in both matches. However, both of our newly formed teams played extremely well and represented our school admirably. Well done all!

Community Hwb
The PTA’s Community Hwb opened its doors for the first time in March. The Hwb contains a community shop, food pantry and meeting space.
The community shop is open three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 1pm), offering a wide variety of clothes, shoes, trinkets, books and other items for sale. Second hand school uniforms are also available for both primary and secondary school pupils.
The food pantry has been a great success and the school and PTA have made links with John and Alison from Baobab Bach, a local CIC, to work together to tackle food poverty. The food pantry is open weekly on Fridays from 9am to 1pm. The food pantry offers a wide variety of both tinned, fresh and frozen food alongside personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies. Anyone is welcome to visit and fill a hessian bag for £5.
The Hwb has welcomed many visitors including the Local Community Coordinator, the local Warden and Early Help. Plans are currently underway to host training and courses for families and the local community including Cygnet and the Nuture programmes in the Hwb.
Please pop in! The kettle is always on!
For more information on Baobab Bach and their work, please see their website: Home - Baobab Bach CIC - Sustainable Communities (baobab-bach.org)
Year 6 have been exploring how forces affect the movement of objects in their inquiry work this month. They have gained a conceptual and scientific understanding of the effects of gravity, friction, air resistance, and buoyancy. In preparation for their end of inquiry experiment, the pupils used Newton meters to measure the mass of classroom objects as well as the force of weight.

Planting with Mr. Jenkins!
Mr. Jenkins visited our class this month to help us plant sunflowers! We are going to use our measuring skills to track how tall our sunflowers grow over time.
We also planted cress seeds to take home.

Outdoor Learning
Our Nursery children have been enjoying our recent sunny weather!
The children have thoroughly enjoyed outdoor learning and getting to use our balance bikes. Balance bikes help children improve their sense of balance as well as their gross motor skills, posture and spatial awareness.
Dressing Up Corner
Our Nursery children are very stylish dressers!
The children have enjoyed creating their own snazzy outfits in our dressing up corner. It has been lovely to see the children explore and experiment with a variety of textures, colours and styles.
Being creative!
We love experimenting in our class. This week, we used leaves, flowers and playdough to create playdough art.
Here are some of our children with their designs!
Upcoming event: Teddy Bear Picnic!
On Monday 17th June, we will be having a Teddy Bear Picnic!
We would be grateful if Parents could send their child to school with their Teddy Bears.

Shrek The Musical
We had a fantastic time at the Millennium Centre, Cardiff watching the outstanding performance - Shrek, The Musical this Thursday. It was an absolute pleasure to accompany our wonderful Junior children to this show. As usual we had lots of complements from audience members who were sitting close to our school. They complemented our children on their outstanding behaviour. A huge thanks to Mrs. Helen Adams, the school's wonderful Clerk for organising such a wonderful event!
Christmas Decorations
Thanks to everyone for the fantastic home made decorations that adorn our school's Christmas tree. They are outstanding!
Winter Wonderland-Friends of Abercerdin
A massive thank you to Friends of Abercerdin for the extraordinary opportunity of having an ice rink/skating experience in school for the community to enjoy. It was an outstanding success. I would like to commend the FOA's determination to ensure that such wonderful opportunities are fully inclusive. They organised two Special Needs sessions and welcomed not only children with additional needs from Evanstown but from far and wide.
They had outstanding feedback from the public for this event. I sure we will all join together in our praise for their ongoing commitment to ensure that everybody enjoys and experiences their amazing activities. Countless hours of their free time is given in order to ensure that their events are to the highest standards. I am very grateful to them. Thank you so much from all the children of Evanstown!

Parental Consultations
How do I book my 3-Way Conference at Abercerdin?
These will take place from 27th November onwards.
You can book your 3-Way conference for all staff at Abercerdin Primary School on the following link: https://forms.office.com/e/xfwcY0PHmX
Please choose an appointment time from the availability listed for your child’s teacher. Please do not panic if you are unable to make the selected date. Simply contact via email or telephone to organise a new date.
We are changing the way we report back to parents. Throughout the 2023/24 academic year, we will be trialling a new reporting system. We will be following the following schedule:
- Autumn
- Goal setting conference as a 3-Way Conference with parents, pupils and staff
- Spring
- Teacher and Pupil Conference
- Teacher and Parent Conference
- Summer
- 3-way Conference with parents, pupils and staff
- End of Year Reports
What is a 3-Way Conference?
A 3-Way Conference actively involves parents, pupils and teachers reflecting on pupil growth as a learner, while acknowledging the most important participants in the learning process – pupil, teacher and parent/carer. This team looks at the evidence shown in the pupil's work and listens as the pupil talks about their learning growth.
The 3-way conferences strengthen the home-school partnership and allows children to see their parents and teacher working together with them. The pupil can provide information to clarify what they have learnt, what are the next steps in their learning, and what progress they are making towards this. The pupil facilitates the conference and is supported by the teacher when needed.
Throughout the conference, parents and the teacher are encouraged to ask questions, provide feedback and encourage the pupil and to share their thoughts and ideas on what is being presented.
In short, 3-way conferences provide a forum to develop a pupil agency for pupil, parents and teachers to acknowledge pupil progress and achievement. They are a valuable avenue for involving parents and pupils in the learning process and helping parents understand the teaching, learning, assessment and reporting process. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the pupil’s achievements.
3-Way Conferences take 20 minutes to ensure that all parents and pupils have the opportunity to meet with their child's teacher and discuss achievement and set future targets.
School calendar
Please check out the school calendar for December dates.
Christmas Dinner

You also have a Seesaw account on which you can access bespoke photos and examples of work for your child throughout the week.

The Friends of Abercerdin Spooktacular Event!
On Monday 30th October, the Friends of Abercerdin held their Spooktacular event in the Sports Hall. The Sports Hall was turned into a Halloween fun filled extravaganza. A movie theatre, ducking apples, pumpkin carving, craft activities, photo booth and much, much more was set up.
A massive thank you to Chairperson, Ms. Emma Mainwaring and the Friends team. We are so grateful that these dedicated parents, who spend many hours of their free time setting up and facilitating such events for not only the children of Evanstown but pupils from nearby schools. We are grateful to all those who attended and made the event successful.
Friends' Light Show
On Saturday 4th November, the Friends of Abercerdin held their Light Show event within the Sports Hall grounds.
The light show by LaserPromo is an accessible alternative to fireworks (all the amazing technicolour but without the loud bangs).
The show was split into two halves, the first half of the show was projected amazing enormous illuminations on to the Forestry whilst the second half of the show was projected strobe lighting above everyone's heads into the sky.
Again, a massive thank you to Ms. Emma Mainwaring and all the Friends of Abercerdin that worked so hard to organise the event for the community.
Fundraising and Awareness Day for
British Heart Foundation
We would, as a school community, wish to express our deepest sympathy for the passing of Sally-Ann. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, husband and daughter. Sally-Ann was very well respected as a friend and ally to Abercerdin Primary School. Her position as Vice- Chair to the Governing Body meant that Sally gave many voluntary hours of her free time to help the school in many important decisions such as the recent appointment of our new Deputy Head teacher. In her memory, the children of Abercerdin held a fund raising day and all donations will be sent to the British Heart Foundation. Many thanks for your support!
Remembrance Day
On Sunday 12th November, children parents and staff are invited to attend the annual Remembrance service at Evanstown war memorial and welfare park. the service will start at 11am so we would advise that you arrive a little earlier at 10.30am. The service will be lead by Rev. Ernie Banwell. We would appreciate children who would like to attend would wear their school uniform, to the service as Ambassadors to the school. The community council are inviting the community to follow them after the service at the Pavillion for light refreshment. the school's poppy display is now at the school's main entrance. please feel free to add your poppies to the collection. Many thanks!

Head teacher's Challenge
November Challenge-Remembrance Day
Each year as a mark of respect and remembrance for all our brave war heroes we ask children to design recycled poppies. We fill the school gates and fences with these to produce a sea of red 'thank you' wishes. We would be grateful if you would design a recycled poppy to place on our fences once again this year. You can also add messages/photos of family members that have served for our country to your poppies. You can create them in any way, as big, small or as many as you wish (perhaps in a wreath). Please remember it's best to use waterproof plastics/materials to do so as these will be on display outside of the school in all weathers. Below are some ideas but please feel free to create your poppies in any way you wish. Many thanks in advance for your contribution to this important day.

The Junior Pupils had a fantastic time at Cardiff Museum this week. We had a lecture from one of the Museum's Curators about Welsh art. We studied lots of different types of art including sculpture, Monets and Renoir paintings!
We loved the Natural World and Dinosaur exhibits. We were lucky enough to roll out and feel a complete snake skin. We were surprised at how smooth it felt. We examined and touched lots of fossils including many different animal teeth.
It was great fun and as usual the host commented about how well behaved and studious the pupils of Abercerdin Primary were! It was a pleasure to lead the trip and spend wonderful learning time with the children. Well done everyone!
